The truck driving industry and all the skilled professionals who comprise it support nearly every aspect of U.S. infrastructure – from delivering food to grocery stores and fuel to gas stations to providing hospitals with the equipment and supplies they need – that’s why the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) initiated the annual Call on Washington (COW) meetings back in 2017 at our nation’s Capital.
The COW gives the trucking industry the opportunity to connect directly with members of Congress, key congressional staff, and federal regulators to discuss legislation and regulations affecting the industry and have their voices heard. A famous quote by former president Thomas Jefferson is featured on TCA’s website and encompasses the intentions and goals of the event. “We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.”
This year’s meetings took place on Sept. 26 with 78 Congressional visits, including one with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), with a total of 29 states represented and 93 attendees from the trucking industry. New this year was the inclusion of the five TCA drivers of the year who shared their perspective with Congress. Topics of conversation ranged from infrastructure funding, truck parking to litigation reform, unfair excise taxes, electric/alternative fuel vehicles, and workforce issues.
Open communication on these topics makes the TCA’s Call on Washington a time of understanding between industry professionals and government officials, leading to great advancements for the industry. DriverFacts is proud to sponsor TCA’s Call on Washington event each year.
